Tennis Elbow is a degenerative/inflammatory condition involving the outer (lateral) portion of the elbow.
It tends to start as an aching sensation around the elbow and typically radiates to the mid portion of the forearm. It is caused by an inflammation of the tendons on the outer aspect of the elbow. The pain tends to be more pronounced with subtle movements such as turning a door knob or lifting a coffee cup. Initial treatment includes activity modification, anti-inflammatory medication and possibly corticosteroid injection. Other treatment modalities inlcude physical therapy and bracing. In refractory cases, an MRI can confirm the diagnosis and occasionally surgery is required to repair the tendon. This surgery is done as an outpatient procedure.
