Injuries during sporting activities range from high energy ligament tears during full contact professional sports to ankle sprains from stepping on an opponent’s foot. Most injuries in this category can be successfully treated with a staged protocol of rest, immobilization and a structured rehabilitation program. Some injuries result in the rupture of a ligament causing the joint to become unstable. In these cases, surgery to repair the torn ligament is often needed but delayed until the acute inflammatory stage has passed. The treatment protocol is dependent on the age, type of injury, and the expected post injury activity level of the patient.
